The Eternity Of God
Lesson 1
Introduction
1. This is the first of a series of lessons on the God of heaven.
2. The longer I live the more convinced I am that man needs to become acquainted with the one and only God of heaven.
- God said. (Jere. 9:23,24).
3. The greatest need of every human creature is to come to a true and saving knowledge of God.
- An unknown God can neither be trusted, served, nor worshipped.
- Only a known God can be trusted, served, and worshipped.
- Only the known God will save us and bless us and be attentive to our needs.
4. It is with humility that I attempt to reveal from God's word the perfections of the true and living God.
- It is with a sense of awe that I try to describe the grandeur and excellency of the Matchless God.
- It is with an awareness of my infinite limitations that I try to describe the Infinite One.
- God is solitary in His excellency. (Exod. 15:11).
5. This knowledge is not found in nature alone nor in human wisdom nor in our feelings, but it is found only in God's holy and inspired word of God.
6. Lesson 1 will discuss "The Eternity of God." It is hoped this lesson and the ones to follow will make us far more aware of the awe-inspiring and worship-provoking grandeur of God.
God Is Eternal
1. God declared His eternity to Moses. (Exod. 3:1-15).
2. The Bible affirms God is eternal. (Deut. 33:27; Psa. 90:2).
The Meaning Of Eternal
1. What does it mean when the Bible affirms God is eternal?
- It does not mean God is merely very old or that He has been in existence for millions of years or that He had a beginning.
- It means that God has always been.
- It means He did not have a beginning.
- It means He has always existed and there has never been a time when He did not exist.
- The largest named number is a googol to the googol power.
- A googol is 1 followed by a hundred zeros.
- This number is beyond our finite comprehension.
- A googol merely to the second power is 1 followed by 10,000 zeros.
- A googol to the third power is 1 followed by 100 million zeros.
- A googol to the googol power is a number so large that it is larger than the circumference of the earth.
- Even this number does not begin to describe the God of the universe. He had no beginning.
2. The eternity of God means more than God has always existed.
- It means there was a time, if "time" it could be correctly called, when God was all alone.
- The Bible says of God. (Gen. 1:1).
- The words "in the beginning" refer to the time when God began to create the heavens and the earth.
- This means that God existed for trillions and trillions of years before there was were any celestial bodies or before there was an earth.
- There was nothing, no one, but God.
- During this infinite period, God was self-contained, self-sufficient, self-satisfied and He had need of nothing.
- If He had needed the universe, angels or man, He would have called them into existence from all eternity.
- The creation of the universe, angels, and man added nothing to God's majesty and glory.
- God chose to create purely as a sovereign act on His part.
- It was caused by nothing outside Himself.
- It was motivated by His own good pleasure. (Eph. 1:5).
- It was for His perfect glory.
- It was that He might manifest His infinite grace and love.
3. The eternity of God means He is alive now to bless and save us.
- He is not indifferent or apathetic to man's needs.
- He is the One who more than any other loves us and was willing to give His Son to die on the cross that He might bless and save us. (Jno. 3:16).
4. The eternity of God means He will always be present to bless man in the endless ages to come.
- Even those who love us most, die and leave us alone.
- God will never die nor will He ever leave us alone. (Heb. 13:5,6).
- He will bless His spiritual children forever and ever. (Matt. 25:46; Tit. 1:2; Rev. 22:5).
What Should Our Response Be To God's Eternity?
1. We should realize that we have been made by the Infinite One. (Gen. 1:26,27; 2:7).
2. We should realize that the Infinite God loves us and wants to bless us. (Rom. 5:8; Jno. 10:10).
3. We should recognize we are accountable to the God who is without beginning or end. (Rom. 14:12).
4. We should accept God's grace by faith and sing His praises now and forever. (Eph. 2:5, 8).
Conclusion
1. As we close this lesson, listen to what the Bible exclaims about the exalted, peerless, perfect God. (Exod. 15:11; Neh. 9:3; 1 Tim. 6:15,16).
