The Holiness Of God
Lesson 6
Introduction
1. The Bible declares man is sinful. (Rom. 3:10,11, 23).
- Man is not born in sin. ( Ezek. 18:20).
- Man becomes sinful and corrupt. (Psa. 14:1-3; Isa. 53:6).
- No accountable person is above sin.
- Every one of us have sinned innumerable times.
- Not one of us knows the number of our transgressions.
- The Bible affirms if we claim sinlessness that:
We deceive ourselves. (1 Jno. 1:8).
The truth is not in us. (1 Jno. 1:8).
We make God a liar. (1 Jno. 1:10).
We do not have His word in us. (1 Jno. 1:10).
- We sin so often and see and hear so much sin that we cease to be as shocked by it and sometimes even defend and rationalize it.
2. Because of our sinful, lustful nature, it is difficult, if not impossible, for us to comprehend a Being who is absolute perfection and who is without sin.
- We tend to make God like ourselves.
- It is incomprehensible that One could live forever without sin.
3. The subject of this lesson is "The Holiness of God."
- We serve no ordinary God.
- We serve a God who is the sum of all moral excellency.
- We serve a God who is absolute purity.
God's Holiness Affirmed
1. The Old Testament exclaims God's holiness.
- Exod. 15:11; Lev. 19:2; Deut. 32:4; Josh. 24:19; 1 Sam. 2:2; 1 Chron. 16:10
- Psa. 30:4; 47:8; 99:5
- Isa. 6:3; Hab. 1:13
2. The New Testament affirms God's holiness.
- Matthew 6:9
- 1 John 1:5
- Rev. 4:8; 6:10; 15:4
God's Holiness Manifested
1. God's holiness is revealed in His sinlessness. (1 Jno.1:5; Jas. 1:13).
- God has absolutely no sin or imperfections in Him.
- It is no wonder that God appointed singers to "praise the beauty of holiness." (2 Chron. 20:21). See Psa. 110:3
2. God's holiness is seen in His dealings with man. (Jas. 1:13,14).
- God cannot be tempted and He never tempts man to sin.
- "The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord." (Prov. 15:26).
- "Thou hatest all workers of iniquity." (Psa. 5:3).
3. God's holiness is manifested in His works. (Psa. 145:17).
- Only the excellent proceeds from Him.
- All that He made was good. (Gen. 1:31).
- Man was made upright (Eccles. 7:29), but failed because of his lusts. (Jas. 1:14)
4. God's holiness is manifested in His law.
- The law forbids sin in all of its modifications: in its most refined as well as its grossest forms, the intent of the heart as well as the pollution of the body, the secret desire as well as the overt act.
- The Psalmist wrote. (Psa. 19:8,9).
- Paul said. (Rom. 7:12).
- The New Testament is even superior to the old law because men can be saved by it.
5. God's holiness is seen at the cross.
- God hated sin so much that He gave His precious Son that man might be set free from the damnation of sin. (Jno. 3:16; Rom. 5:8).
- God hated sin so much that He forsook His precious Son on the cross. (Matt. 27:46).
- God laid all the sins of men on His Son. (Isa. 53:4-6).
- Jesus bore our sins alone that He might be our Savior.
Our Response To God's Holiness
1. We should praise God for His absolute holiness. (Psa. 99:5; 89:7).
2. We should desire to be conformed to Him.
- We will never even come close to His perfection.
- We should still seek to be like Him. (1 Pet. 1:16).
- We are never exhorted to be omnipotent, omniscient, or omnipresent, but we are exhorted to be holy. (1 Pet. 1:15,16).
3. We should exhort others to holiness.
4. We should despise sin.
- We do not like garbage.
- We must not let men fill our homes, our churches, and our nation with sin.
- We are free and we should our freedom to fight against those things, which destroy holiness.
Conclusion
1. Our God is holy and excellent above our comprehension.
2. Let us never miss a day praising God for His holiness and may we never miss a day praying and striving to be like Him. (Psa. 19:14).
